    Contenuti

Borden Dent, Jeff Torguson, Thomas Hodler, Cartography: Thematic Map Design, McGraw-Hill Education, 2008
Peter A. Burrough, Rachael A. McDonnel, Christopher D. Loyd, Principles of Geographical Information Systems, OUP Oxford, 2015

    Obiettivi formativi

    Contents

City Mapping classes will provide students with the principles for the representation of the urban territory through analogical and digital representation tools.

    Textbook and course materials

Borden Dent, Jeff Torguson, Thomas Hodler, Cartography: Thematic Map Design, McGraw-Hill Education, 2008
Peter A. Burrough, Rachael A. McDonnel, Christopher D. Loyd, Principles of Geographical Information Systems, OUP Oxford, 2015

    Course objectives

Aim of the course is to introduce students to the systems of representation of the city and the territory from the traditional to the innovative systems, providing the basis on maps production systems and on the and interpretation of a map and their use for the urban project. The course will also introduce students to Geographic Information Systems as an innovative system for the acquisition, representation, processing and management of spatial data.

    Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamentals and methods of architectural surveying and representation. Knowledge of the basis of plane trigonometry and elementary and analytic geometry.

    Teaching methods

    Lessons and exercises.
Lessons and educational activities from a.y. 2019/2020 are also given online for students with specific needs and following a request to be submitted to the Students Office.

    Evaluation methods

Final exam will consist of an oral interview on the theoretical topics debated during the lessons and on the presentation of a GIS project on an urban area chosen by the student.
The examination will verify the acquisition of theoretical knowledge of the discipline and the development of skills related to the execution of the cartographic project. The evaluation will be based on the skills acquired by the student, on the correctness of speech during the exposition and on the critical contribution to the theoretical discussion and to the practical application.

    Other information

To support frontal teaching and exercises teaching and cartographic material will be provided to students through a data sharing platform.

    Course Syllabus

Introduction to mapping; History of cartography; Classifications of maps; Base maps and thematic maps; The shape of the Earth; The reference solids; The geographic coordinates; The projection on the plane; The geodetic reference system; Traditional cartography and digital mapping; Qualitative and quantitative content of a map; The topographic networks; GPS / GNSS; Survey systems: photogrammetry, survey from aerial platform, satellite surveying; The official cartography in Italy; The Geographic Information Systems; Web platform for carthography.
