    Contents

Recalls to basic mathematical topics, points and vectors in space, matrices and geometric transformations, parametric curves and surfaces, Freeform curves and surfaces. References to real life applications (real life applications) will be provided throughout the course.

    Textbook and course materials

    - Edie Miglio, Nicola Parolini, Anna Scotti, Christian Vergara, 2019. Matematica e Design. Springer
In addition to the reference text, the lecturer will point out useful materials (texts and handouts).

    Course objectives

Knowledge and Ability to Understand: The course aims to provide knowledge of the basic mathematical tools for describing shapes in two- and three-dimensional space and for modeling geometric shapes and Freeforms.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: The course aims to provide students with the tools to be able to appropriately represent curves and surfaces in space analytically.

Autonomy of judgment: Through the course it is intended to make students aware that an artistic representation of a curve or surface, created according to aesthetic and functional criteria, must be followed by a quantitative one, expressible through mathematical formulas.

Communication skills: The course aims to strengthen the mathematical and linguistic tools useful in making students able to communicate ideas and solutions concerning mathematics applied to design and to expound clearly and rigorously the knowledge acquired.

Learning skills: Through the course, an attempt is made to foster the development of a flexible and analytical mindset that enables students to understand mathematical representations of curves and surfaces, representations that ensure their reproducibility and implementation in modeling software.

    Prerequisites
