Testi di riferimento | G. CARBONARA (a cura di), Trattato di restauro architettonico, UTET Scienze e Tecniche, Torino 1996-2011, voll. I-IV (Fondamenti); voll. V-VII (Impianti); voll. IX-XII (Aggiornamenti); |

Course objectives | The teaching is devoted to providing students with critical and technical means of knowledge and method aiming towards architectural restoration design, according to fabric conservative vocation. Therefore, starting from historically contextualising restoration discipline, since its origin up to contemporaneity, the course deals with its methodological and operational basis. |
Prerequisites | Methodological and operational basis of dimension drawing survey (manual-based). |
Teaching methods | The frontal lectures are assisted by in-house and external seminars, at least one within each four-month term, to deepen relevant issues. To illustrate some restoration works in situ and favour restoration design performing of the appointed theme, the course consists of some inspections, too (at least one within each four-month term). Once a month, the frontal lesson (4 hours) is moreover substituted for reviewing students’ restoration designs, thus verifying with the professor their development. |
Evaluation methods | Each student must perform a restoration design in which his/her contribution must be clearly recognisable. This design must pertain a multi-layered building largely deteriorated, selected according to the professor’s indications. It comprises the building: architectural survey, as-found condition survey (materials and building techniques), degradation phenomena survey, fabrics chronologies, operational procedures designing aimed to preserve, restore and protect materials and surfaces. For the appointed building, students must provide bibliographic, iconographic, cartographic and documentary research, building as-found condition and deterioration surveying of all fronts recognised as significative according to the professor’s indications, building stratigraphy-based analysis and restoration operational procedures design. The exam is an oral prove and it consists of illustrating own restoration design. The exam is verification and appraisal mean of the competences and the skills acquired. Illustrating own restoration design is allowing to verify the acquired knowledge as ability of properly recording and describing the studied building constitutive features, physical-chemical behaviours e damage paths by using correctly definitions and nomenclatures. Thus, students’ grade of comprehension such as ability to record and interpret recognised issues and problems it is being verified, likewise the skills to discover causes and developments of building vulnerabilities and problems thus identified. The exam is appraising students’ capability in applying these knowledges into the studied case and of coherently deducing implications, such as students must be able to solve problems thus identified by designing relevant and appropriate operational solutions, properly communicating their design goals, means and strategies of implementation according to specialised lexicons and nomenclatures acquired during the course. This activity responds to criteria for compiling reports agreed with the teacher, who themselves constitute a progressive method of acquiring knowledge and acquiring skills. The reports compiled during the course of the year contribute to defining the topics of the exam interview. During the exam students must answer to three questions at least, regarding issues such as dealt with during the course. |
Other information | Frontal lectures use ppt. slides presentations, regularly provided to students such as didactic supports. Others digital contributions (pdf.) are provided as relevant issues deepening. Every digital document is accessible by the relevant section of the website. To keep personal notes during the lectures is widely suggested. Some of the reports (for which a reference format is provided) prepared by the students during the course of the year, at their choice, can be presented during the examination and constitute discussion topics. |
