The theme of "Technologies for Resilient Living Environments" refers to the research, development and application of technologically advanced solutions that, with reference to living, working and cultural production environments at various scales, confer the capacity to preserve their identity in response to environmental and social changes and stresses, adapting and regenerating, while promoting positive and sustainable change; living environments are defined as all those places, open and confined, in which living and working activities take place, including buildings and infrastructure.
The research themes characterizing the industrial PhD course recognize special emphasis on the promotion of economic development and the production system, facilitating joint planning in relation to research topics and the activities of PhD students. The purpose is also to develop shared research projects between universities and companies starting from the needs of the companies themselves, which today must innovate from an organizational and strategic perspective. The training project should consider the presence of PhD Executive positions and 50% co-funded positions by balancing planned teaching activities, other activities, and research activities at the company.

The overall objective of the Doctoral Program is to prepare high-level technicians and researchers capable of working in cultural, scientific, and industrial activities through the use and development of technologies necessary to improve the resilience of living, working and cultural production environments at various scales, now more than ever affected by climate and social change.

The modifications induced by climate change and the recent pandemic find living environments still unprepared to cope with them structurally, thus promoting an adaptation generated inevitably by the emergency and not by that necessary renewal, predictive and resilient, capable of maintaining the functionality of the environment and its recognizability.

The goal of using and/or developing innovative technologies makes it possible to achieve goals of waste reduction and minimization and efficiency in the use of resources with high yields and low impacts and at the same time, in a holistic view, to combine personal well-being and work environments; moreover, in the area of cultural production, the goal is to increase participation in cultural life also through access to cultural heritage, fostering innovation and seizing the opportunities offered by digital technology.

The objectives are also modulated with reference to the companies present in the current cycle and contributing to the activation of the Doctoral Program; in this perspective, some specific objectives refer to:

-train personnel capable of developing and experimenting with new systems for the creation and visualization of digital content of living environments based on the use of real-time interactive 3D graphics;

-train personnel capable of developing a system for risk simulation in workplaces in virtual reality environments according to human-centered logic;

-train personnel capable of implementing centralized distribution systems of augmented reality (AR) content in a geo-localized manner via cloud platform and app in order to improve the enjoyment of cultural heritage;

-train personnel capable of developing innovative catalysts for Water Gas Shift reaction and alternative methods for methane production from residual biomass gasification;

- train personnel capable of using techniques for dynamic identification and structural monitoring of historic monumental properties.

The Industrial Ph.D. in "TECHNOLOGIES FOR RESILIENT LIVING ENVIRONMENTS" trains professionals capable of working in a variety of fields, from the design, prototyping and fine-tuning of technologically advanced solutions, to planning, monitoring and control for public administration and private companies, to the field of basic and applied research on issues of environmental sustainability, resilience and technological innovation, with reference to living environments, that is, all those places, open and confined, in which living and working activities take place, including buildings and infrastructure.

PhDs, at the end of their training, will be able to promote the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge in both academic and industrial settings. Therefore, the professional figure of the Ph.D. will be qualified to carry out activities both in public and private entities (e.g.: ministerial, regional, municipal and agencies for the management and enhancement of cities and territory, cultural heritage, archaeological-museum complexes, CNR, ENEA, etc.) and in private companies.

These activities, which are given below in a list that is necessarily not exhaustive, include:

-conducting, coordinating and directing research both in the project area and in the area of monitoring, management and control, as well as prototyping and developing innovative products;

-research and/or management in research projects;

-consulting for resilient management and preservation of cultural, archaeological and architectural heritage;

-coordination of research programs incentivized by national or European legislation;

-management and maintenance of deteriorated building systems; restoration or reconstruction of structures and infrastructure damaged by man-made and/or natural events;

-development of Virtual or Augmented Reality solutions;

-creations and visualization of digital content based on the use of real-time interactive 3D graphics;

-development of protocols and experiments for the creation, development, prototyping and interaction of humans with physical and virtual products and systems;

-development of artificial lighting systems in the context of progressive digitization and with a view to their integration with natural light;

-design of innovative, sustainable and resilient technological solutions;

-research activities (including in a coordinating role) at universities and public or private, national and international research organizations, both on basic and on those, strongly interdisciplinary, related to resilient living environments.
